WLS' Kelli Walker Spurts Anti-White Slur Over Richard Sherman Rant

Once again the dual racial sensitivity standard prevails as black radio traffic info babe, Ovation hair care products spokesperson and  recent WLS-AM affirmative action hire, Kelli Walker, blurted out an anti-white slur while bantering with morning talkers, Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft.
The white-sounding
non-cornrowed Kelli Walker

On their Monday morning program, Wolf and Proft were discussing Seattle Seahawk, Richard Sherman's now famous, thuggish and threatening post-game rant.

In the widely disseminated interview with Erin  Andrews of Fox Sports (see video below), the cornrow-coiffed Seattle  cornerback assumed his most threatening pose and semi coherent ghetto lingo and foamed at  Andrews, "

“Don’t you ever talk about me!”

“Who was talking about you?” Andrews asked

“Crabtree. Don’t you open your mouth about the best. Or I’m going to shut it for you real quick. LOB"

At this, the non-cornrowed, black traffic news reader, Kelli Walker, blurted into the Wolf-Proft discussion: Sounds like she had a blond moment with that question.

Huh?

It was an entirely legitimate question in the context of Sherman's vitriolic gibberish -- Time Sports correspondent Sean Gregory even wrote that it showed the blond Andrew's professionalism in keeping the rant going.

But Kelli Walker called it: A blond moment.

A blond moment?.

Why isn't that considered a racial and sexist slur? Only white people have blond hair and the "Blond moment" taunt has become a racially-tinged suggestion of stupidity on the part of white women.

Imagine the brouhaha that would ensue with racial hucksters Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton if a white WLS employee blurted that Kelli Walker had a "big butt moment." -- or a "Cornrows moment."

Oh wait a minute, the white-sounding Walker has straight hair.

Do Ovation hair care products work for cornrows?

Bitchy Bimbos "Buzzed Driving" Ads Ruining WLS-AM

If you haven't heard the bitchy bimbos "buzzed driving" PSAs, you obviously haven't been listening to WLS radio.

Ad Council PSA girl Becky gets her arm cracked
due to catty girlfriend's "Buzzed  Driving"

We're talking about the ad where two, genuinely annoying, twenty-something girls, while driving home from a party, bitch about the pick up lines they somehow attracted, the tacky jewelry worn by girls there and life in general.

There can be little wonder as two why these two gems are driving home alone.

But in the course of their catty cacophony, the girl driving, runs head-on into oncoming traffic.

We hear the passenger, one Becky, scream, and then we hear a grotesque cracking of one of her bones.

The driver then apologetically explains that she was only "buzzed", not drunk. So bitchy Becky then sarcastically says that since it was only being "buzzed", it was OK and we hear her bone grotesquely uncrack.
The Ad Council produced this audio atrocity
US DOT paid for it WLS schedules it - endlessly!

Then the ever-sarcastic, bitchy, Becky says, no - it's not OK -- and we hear her arm grotesquely crack again.

Then a sincere sounding, wimpy, twenty-something, pajama boy's voice ominously instructs us that
buzzed driving is really drunk driving, so don't do it.

Now we don't know about you, but listening to 30 seconds of annoying millennial generation bimbos bitching and bones cracking is not our idea of stellar radio listening.

It's actually repulsive.

All the more so when this ad runs endlessly as it has been for the past few months on Chicago's 50k watt clear-channel WLS-AM.

The frequency of this ad would be laughable if it weren't so blatantly annoying.

On the WLS morning drive Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft show, the bitchy bimbos buzzed driving ad ran no fewer than 5 times last Tuesday. It runs at least 5 to 7 times during every one of Mark Levine's late evening WLS talkathons (one night they ran it back-to back during the same commercial break.) And it runs incessantly at various other times throughout the WLS broadcast day.

We've heard the bitchy buzzed bimbos whining and bone-cracking on WLS as early as 7 AM!!

That doesn't even make sense in terms of effective use of PSA time -- unless WLS figures that a good portion of its aging audience is staggering home then from a night of heavy guzzling at Chicago's bars with 5 AM licenses.

These godawful PSAs are produced by the Ad Council - a compendium of ad agencies who donate their "creative" work. The air time is subsidized by various charities and government agencies (the US DOT commissioned Bitchy Bimbos Buzzed Driving - your tax dollars at work.) The radio stations - at least in the case of WLS - determine when to run the ads.

WLS spokesperson, Kim Rasmussen told the Chicago Lampoon, that even they can't stand the ad, (which was commissioned by the Federal Department of Transportation) and are perplexed as to why it runs on their own station constantly. This despite the fact that WLS, itself, schedules the airtimes and frequency.

"Even we tire of listening to that PSA. We’re trying to get to the bottom of why it is playing so often. I agree that it’s excessive hearing it multiple times per hour." Rasmussen said.

She added that WLS will be working on PSA and Ad spot management in the coming year.

Well, we're delighted to hear that.

Maybe WLS will ameliorate this audio atrocity by deciding, instead, to run that catchy Kars 4 Kids jingle -- 870 times a day.

Chicago PC Media Mum On Race of Black Streeterville Mob

Dvonte Sykes, Trovolus Pickett and Derodte Wright
The violent Saturday night attacks on 3 white men and one Japanese tourist in the posh Streeterville neighborhood were perpetrated by  a gang of  15 to 20 black youths from the South side, according to Chicago's WLS-AM.

Dvonte Sykes, Trovolus Pickett and Derodte Wright were charged as adults today with felony robbery and mob action and police are still looking for about a dozen others.

The thuggish African-American mob violently attacked the four victims and stole ipods, cellphones and other electronic devices.

Callers to WLS-AM this morning, who identified themselves as retired or current Chicago Police said the city was covering up a wave of black on white mob violence in the city.

Radio Talker Mark Levin: Sam Kinison Reincarnate?

I generally agree with most of what conservative radio talker Mark Levin has to say. He's on Chicago's WLS 890-AM from 9pm to Midnight, M-F.

But I simply cannot listen to him anymore.

First, his voice is a whiny, shrill, annoying abomination.

Second, he drones on and on in seemingly endless one-legged harangues, seldom interspersed with callers and never refreshed by interchange with a co-host.

And when he really takes off in a frenzied rant, he reminds me of the late, great Sam Kinison.

The 2010 "Kars 4 Kidz Awards": Chicago's Worst Radio Commercials

Marketing mavens have long been saying that radio is the most intimate of mediums and they're probably right. Radio approaches you thru only one of the senses. It usually approaches you when you are in a captive situation -- in a car or with little electronic devices attached to your head. It gets up with you in the morning and even follows you into the shower.

And since radio is so intimate, when it heaves up something really seriously awful, it becomes a really serious insult -- an unwanted invasion of personal space. I think that's why bad radio commercials are so infuriating.

I actually hit the station change button every time that hideous "Kars 4 Kidz" commercial pollutes the airwaves. There have been a lot of really bad commercials on the radio over the past year. But try as I might, I could find no comprehensive list of the worst ads, so as a public service, the Chicago Lampoon has compiled one.

I have named the list in honor of the "Kars 4 Kidz" jingle. Despite the fact that it still regularly spews forth, it is not included on the list itself since it is so far and above the run of the mill bad radio commercials, that it is in an entire class of its own.

In ascending order here are my picks for worst radio ads of 2010:

#4. Roma's Stomach Bug ads for Natren's Healthy Trinity

In these, WLS morning drive co-host, Roma, plucks out some health item from that day's news -- such as an outbreak of dysentary in Indonesia -- and tells you how you can avoid things like the perils of dysentary if you just take some of Natren's biotic stomach bugs every morning. Over the Christmas holiday, Roma delivered these messages in conjunction with a very odd sounding elf character.

I find Roma's voice annoying, the odd sounding elf's voice very annoying and the thought of ingesting these weird stomach bugs extremely annoying. These messages have now expanded beyond the morning Don Wade & Roma program and now annoy throughout the day on WLS.

#3. Smarmy Scott Lee Cohen's Job Fairs

For reasons no one quite understands, Chicago pawn broker Scott Lee Cohen insisted on squandering scads of his money running for IL governor as an independent. He did this after winning the Democrat primary for Lt. Gov. and then withdrawing in a teary, blubbering news conference after apparently being threatened by Democrat chieftain, Mike Madigan.

In his second run he ran the very same ad he ran in the first round, wherein his smarmy marshmallow tones instructed us that all the state's employment problems would be solved by his gimmicky "job fairs." The very same ad ran so frequently over a period of at least 5 months that by October, most listeners could mouth the meaningless drivel along with him word-for-word.

#2 McDonald's Coffee Slurping

Most children from civilized backgrounds are taught by their mothers at an early age that it is impolite to make slurping sounds when ingesting liquids. As such it is considered rude to do so. It offends most people. That is why the 3 Stooges used to noisily slurp their soup. It was so obnoxious and uncouth, it was funny.

The people at McDonald's ad agency must have been raised with wolves as surrogate parents in the wild, because they seem to think that slurping coffee sounds are just what their clientle wants to hear. As such they have run two radio ads with people noisily slurping their coffee. It drives me nuts.

But, come to think of it, coffee slurping is probably standard table etiquette for your basic McDonald's customer.

#1. Your Mother Just Got Run Over by a Car -- Dignity Memorial Providers

The winner of the 2010 "Kars 4 Kidz" award for worst Chicago radio ad goes, hands down, to Dignity Memorial Providers for their "Your Mother's Dead" offering.

On more than one bright morning I have rolled out of bed, full of energy, ready to optimistically take on the day, only to be felled by this total downer of a commercial.

A somber spokesman for the ghouls over at Dignity Memorial -- a corporate consortium of funeral homes, crematoria and cemetaries -- depicts a scenario where your father calls you to tell you your mother was run over by a car while on vacation and is now, quite dead.

"You wonder if you've ever really seen your father cry," the ghoulish spokesman intones.

Then you are told to trust the caring folks at Dignity Memorial Inc. to take care of all your future mortuary, burial or cremation needs. This radio ad was so collosally, depressingly bad, that I frantically went down the AM dial desperately looking for something, anything a bit more uplifting to cheer me up.

All I could find was that lousy Kars 4 Kidz jingle.

WLS' Lise Dominique -- The Most Mellifluous Female Voice on Chicago Radio

Lise Dominique has the best voice of any female on Chicago radio today.

If you are asking yourself "Who the hell is that?" I don't blame you.

Let me preface this by saying, I am not related to Lise Dominique, I don't know Lise Dominique, I know no one who knows Lise Dominique -- nor do I ever care to meet her (more on that later.)

But she has the best female voice on Chicago radio.

I can say this with some authority.

I was a press secretary in Washington, D.C. for almost two decades and as such, have dealt with more media personalities than most will ever do.

Sometime, this passed summer, after coming home from the beach, I noticed that there was this new, different girl reading the news late night on WLS-AM (Chicago's second mega clear-channel radio station.)

She had the softest, most mellifluous voice. Soft, friendly -- kind of like the girl next door, but with a little bit of a crackly edge.

My mass media intake then, as now, was (aside from the web) mostly radio.

During the most productive times in my life I have eschewed television.

After my live-in girlfriend (with whom I regularly watched mindless TV) dumped me while an undergrad, I decided to become serious and eschewed television for the next 3 years.

I became editor-in-chief of our campus newspaper at one of the largest Universities in the country, simultaneously interned as a press secretary at the State Legislature and pulled almost a 4.0 GPA.

Later, while in a productive period in the Nation's Capitol, I never watched TV, save on those few occasions when my roomates, one of whom was from Manchester, UK and worked at the British Embassy and the other of whom was a liberal Republican whose father worked for the CIA -- wanted to watch either the MLB All-Star Game or a movie like "The Battle of Britain," or "Patton" where the US Armed Forces made the British look silly.

And at that time I continued to regularly get my media intake mostly from radio.

So I think I know a thing or two about it.

And this girl has the best voice of any that I have heard on the 6 or 7 or so of the Chicago stations to which I listen.

Her voice is intriguing -- but I don't want to meet her.

Let me tell you why.

While a press secretary in Washington, I would book various of our spokesmen on New York and Washington media outlets. One day, I booked Dr. Igor Glagolev, a former member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences -- who had defected to the USA -- on the Tony Brown Show in Washington. It was syndicated nationwide.

Tony Brown's aide seemed a very nice girl. She had the most wonderfully, mellifluous -- and thoroughly intriguing voice. She was flirting with me over the phone.

So I made a point of driving Dr. Glagolev out to the studio.

I met her.

Let me just suffice it to say that -- her superlative voice nonwithstanding -- she had a bodice to rival that of Mama Cass. She was definitely a candidate for Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig or Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating.

And -- not to be overly cruel -- she had a face that would have qualified her for Hills's Science Diet or Purina Pro-Plan commercials.

So that is why I do not want to meet Lise Dominique.

But I think her voice is the best on all of Chicago radio.

I hope WLS radio will advance her.

I'll probably come to rue this recommendation as she is likely a hopeless Left-Coast, Left-Wing statist.

But she has a great voice.

A really great voice.

Schakowsky: Immigrants Afraid of Census

Speaking on the morning WLS radio Don Wade and Roma Show, North side Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-9th) said that Chicago's low rate of census form return was due to the fears of Chicago's massive population of recent immigrants.

Hear the entire interview here.

The rate of return of the mailed census forms was a paltry 38% in the Chicago area compared to a nationwide average of 52%.

Schakowsky said that this was because immigrants are poor and begin to "double up" with several families living in a single apartment. "They may be afraid to say how many people are living in certain spaces," she said.

Wait a minute. Is Schakowsky saying that immigrants, many of them illegal, are overcrowding apartments and homes in violation of various municipal codes of occupancy, health codes and fire codes?

Immigration control activists have been arguing for more than a decade that this overcrowding is commonplace among immigrants. They argue that it is unsafe, unhealthy and poses an unfair burden on other renters who have to share common spaces with people who are not paying there fair share. They also argue that it is unfair to taxpayers who pay to educate the large numbers of children brought into their neighborhood schools after being illegally crammed into these dwellings.

In fact, in September of 2006, there was a fatal fire in Schakowsky's own district where 6 illegal alien children died. They were among 13 illegal aliens who lived in a cramped East Rogers Park apartment.

And this past February 14th, 7 people, including a newborn died in a fire which swept thru a Cicero apartment that was packed with multiple families.

Yet when Cicero authorities had tried to enforce the codes of occupancy that would have stopped such overcrowding, Schakowsky and her friends in the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant Rights - Chicago's main illegal alien lobby group - called the enforcement racist. It discriminated against Latino immigrants, they said, and in '97,they prompted the Clinton Justice Department to force Cicero to desist.

And when Waukegan authorities objected to packing multiple families and unrelated persons into apartments and homes, Schakowsky and her illegal alien lobbyist friends got the Clinton Justice Department in '97 to force them to desist too.

And now Schakowsky is explaining to us that immigrants aren't answering the census questionnaire because they may be packing multiple families into small apartments and don't want to get caught by authorities who she and her allies have not yet browbeaten into non-enforcement of their occupancy and fire codes.

What a web these leftist do-gooders and uplifters weave.

WLS's Mancow for Cotto = Cubs' Brock for Broglio

A few hours ago WLS 890 AM announced that it would replace super shock-jock, Mancow Muller, with former Moody Bible divinity student and traffic news reader, Cisco Cotto in its 9 to 11 am morning slot.

WLS station manager, Michael Damsky told the Chicago Sun-Times that the move was designed to give the station a more consistent conservative talk sound.

In that he certainly succeeded as the diminutive Bible thumper, Cotto is certainly more consistently dull.

To be sure, WLS thoroughly misused the flamboyant talents of Mancow by pairing him with the wearisome, middle-aged former WBBM-AM newsreader, Pat Cassidy. In fact the odd couple of the Chicago airwaves almost came to actual on-air blows on several occasions during their stormy year and a half together.

Cotto is the darling of the religious right-to-life mavens of the Illinois Review and certainly will provide a predictably conservative lead-in to Rush Limbaugh at 11 am. But Mancow may have provided the most incisive and witty libertarian-conservative critique of the Chicago Way ever to have been heard here. He once almost had leftist Congressperson, Jan Schakowsky in tears.

And with the exception of WGN's Garry Meier and WCPT's Jake Hartford (both of whom also were cut loose by the dour WLS), Mancow was the only genuine funny AM presence in Chicago.

The CST's media critic, Lewis Lazare, wrote that the sacking of Mancow was an attempt by WLS to shore up its flagging ratings among 25 to 54 year old adult listeners.

Oh, yea, this is going to work.

Just as it did for Cubs' General Manager, John Holland who in 1964 set out to shore up the Cubs shaky starting rotation by trading a young left fielder by the name of Lou Brock for an ailing right handed starter by the name of Ernie Broglio.

That season, Brock (whose talents were underutilized by the Cubs, much as Mancow's by WLS) sparked the Cardinals to a World Championship with 20+ steals and a .315 batting average.

That same year, Broglio posted a 4-7 record with a 4.04 ERA for the Cubs who finished a dismal 8th place in the then 10 team NL. He was out of baseball in a year and a half.

Brock, of course, went on to have a stellar career and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1985.

I trust that Bruce DuMont has Mancow's niche ready at the Radio Hall of Fame at the Museum of Broadcast Communications on North La Salle St., because the nationally syndicated superjock will almost certainly end up there.

And Cisco Cotto can be hired to dust off Mancow's plaque and conduct tours.

Perennial Candidate Andy Martin Airs Spots Calling Kirk Homosexual

After almost three decades of involvement in the political realm -- mostly in Chicago -- I thought I had seen and heard just about everything. But this morning, a 30 second political spot which aired on WLS AM during the 8 o'clock hour jolted me out of bed and disabused me of that notion.

In it, perennial candidate, Anthony Martin-Trigona, (aka Andy Martin) accused North suburban GOP Congressman, Mark Kirk, of being a closet homosexual and of being part of a Republican homosexual cabal which covers up for him.

In another first, a WLS announcer read a statement at the conclusion of the paid spot, distancing Citadel Broadcasting from the content of the spot, but pointing out that it was required by law to air it, since Martin is a candidate for U.S. Senator.

I had never heard a station put its own disclaimer after a paid political spot before, but given the veracity of most such paid campaign ads, they might as well keep the tape handy.

In the ad, Martin doesn't come right out and say that Kirk is gay, but rather quotes two well known political operatives as having said so.

"I helped expose many of Barack Obama's lies in 2008," the ad goes. "Today, I am fighting for the facts about Mark Kirk. Illinois Republican leader Jack Roeser says there is a 'solid rumor that Kirk is a homosexual.' Roeser suggests that Kirk is part of a Republican Party homosexual club. Lake County Illinois Republican leader Ray True says Kirk has surrounded himself with homosexuals."

"Mark Kirk should tell Republican voters the truth."

Anyone who has been around political circles long, is painfully aware that political types are bigger gossips and scolds than even members of a small town's ladies sewing circle.

And true to form, fueled by his whirlwind marrige to and divorce from a former political aide, rumors had been flying around in Illinois GOP circles as to Kirk's possible alternative preferences.

This kind of thing has been going on for ages. I once had a little twerp on Capitol Hill tell me that not only was a certain well known U.S. Senator gay, but he also had no testicles. This kind of thing is par for the course among politicos. But I have never before heard of one taking to the airwaves with such raw sewerage.

Andy Martin has been hanging around Chicago since the 70s, when as Anthony Martin-Trigona, he ran several campaigns for Mayor of Chicago and other city offices as an anti-machine, reform Democrat.

He moved down to Florida in the 90s, changed his name to Andy Martin and ran for the Florida State Senate as a Republican in '96. His campaign was marked by a shoving contest that he had with several TV crew members, which resulted in his conviction for criminal mischief. While out on appeal, he was jailed for contempt of court, inadvertantly released early, whereon he hotfooted it back to Chicago. As of last year a criminal warrant remained active for him in that state.

Since then Martin has twice engaged in laughably long-shot runs for the Illinois Republican U.S. Senate nomination. This time he is facing, among others, Kirk, who is the state GOP establishment's favorite. Yet Kirk has engendered strong opposition from conservatives and while a recent Chicago Tribune poll showed him ahead, a very large percentage of the GOP primary electorate remains undecided.

So inveterate political troublemaker and bad boy Martin's bizarre foray onto the airwaves could have an as yet to be determined effect. If Kirk spends time denying the charges, he lends them unwanted exposure. If he keeps mum, they could fester.

Whatever happens, one thing is clear. In what is likely going to be a golden opportunity for a banner year for Republicans, nationwide, the Illinois GOP is clearly intent on showing that it is still not ready for prime time, or as they call it in Daley's 11th Ward -- the stupid party.

Ending the Iraq War With Cool Jewelry

I have to admit it. I occasionally listen to WCPT radio. Principally so that you don't have to, but also because the "Chicago's Progressive Talk," offspring of lefty Air America has one genuinely amusing and marginally reasonable program. That is, of course, the offbeat, Saturday morning, "Awake with Jake," which features the acerbic and witty, Jake Hartford, a recent castoff from WLS-AM.

So while listening to that show this morning, I was jolted by a paid advertisement for custom jewelry. It seems that Anne Maxfield, the annoying liberal feminist former radio talker, is now hawking her line of semi-antique necklace creations.

Her paid ad, which airs only on WCPT, pleads with you to buy her jewelry because she is a morally superior fellow leftist.

"When Anne was on with right wingers on an all-sports show, she was thinking about how to end the war in Iraq and about making cool jewelry," says the ad's female announcer.

This is what you might call: making a virtue out of necessity.

Maxfield had a solid gig at behometh WGN radio for more than a decade, last working with fellow liberal, John Williams.

But she succumbed to the siren song of a far bigger paycheck and left WGN to join conservative Mike North at WSCR sports radio. She is a big girl and went into that situation with eyes wide open (and no doubt primarily focused on her bank account.)

She was not a fan favorite of the predominately male SCORE listeners and didn't help her cause by making inane Maoist utterances to the effect that all golf courses should be turned into public parks.

So when the tensions between Maxfield, North and North's audience became untenable, she got the sack. Anyone who has been in broadcasting knows that that is hardly an unusual occurence. Radio talkers, as a rule, have less job security and longevity than Tiger Woods' mistresses.

But now, the liberal sheep listeners of WCPT are being urged to show their "progressive" colors by shelling out upwards of $100 for Maxfield's necklace creations. Some of the necklaces, the ad tells us, are also suitable for men, a fact that will be certain to get her items stocked at the more esoteric boutiques around Clark and Diversey.

I went to her website, http://www.circa1856.com and must admit that some of the creations were, indeed interesting. They are essentially historically colorful old watch fobs from the Civil War era onward, that she has transformed into necklaces.

I particularly liked the one with the hunter theme, which shows a sportsman blasting away with his rifle.

I wonder how Anne explains that one away to the sensitive "friends of Bambi" who listen to WCPT.

Todd Stroger's Marvelously Blissful Ignorance

In the wake of the vote by the Cook County Board to partially roll back his sales tax hike, Board President, Todd Stroger, made the rounds of the airwaves this morning. And while casually chatting with Don Wade and Roma on WLS-AM, he made the amazing revelations that:

1. He did not watch or listen to Obama's major speech on Afghanistan last night, because "he doesn't ever have time to watch TV."

2. He never reads Chicago newspapers because, "they are all biased against me, and besides, they have gone up in price by 50 cents."

3. He never uses the internet as a source of news and information because,"I have people to do that for me."

4. He gets all of his news from a "clipping service."

YIKES!

He also said that he didn't know what Obama's speech was about, and when told that it was about the future conduct of the war in Afghanistan, he said that he was too busy with managing Cook County to worry about Afghanistan.

Now this is the chief executive of the second largest county government in the country -- an entity with a $3 billion annual budget, larger than all but 6 states --and he doesn't even read a newspaper or monitor electronic sources of news!

He did admit that he would occasionally watch television, but it was usually only to catch reruns of "The Nanny" around midnight.

Anyone else think that maybe the Toddling could himself benefit from the care and guidance of a stern nanny?

And just who were the people who actually voted for this clown over Tony Peraica in the election of 2006?

Oh well, ignorance is bliss.

Libertarian Mancow Wants Nanny State to Police His Diet

I sometimes wonder if trendy radio jocks who find employment on conservative talk stations don't just adopt the self-description of being "libertarian" just to safeguard their employment, while not jeopardizing their invitations to A-list, wine and brie soirees on the Gold Coast, in Evanston, and in other trendy leftist circles.

First there was Jay Marvin, the self described, bi-polar, manic depressive talker on WLS-AM a few years back. As the station got progressively more conservative in tone, he began calling himself a "libertarian," while persisting in purveying his unabashed old-line liberal claptrap.

Then there was Jerry Agar, on WLS and now WGN. He genuinely is a libertarian. In fact during his stint in North Carolina, he rubbed shoulders with some acquaintances of mine who run a genuinely libertarian think tank there.

But now there is Erich Mancow Muller, the super jock that WLS recently lured in to fill its 9 to 11 am slot.

I genuinely like Mancow. He's a breath of fresh air after the turgid old schtick of Don Wade and Roma who seem to think that a weekly 30 minute bit on wine tasting makes for good radio. (I'm sure, however, it does generate a goodly number of gratis vintage bottles for the Wade household wine cellar.)

Former disco disc spinner, Wade has a sense of humor that high school sophomores would find embarassingly unsophisticated. Any day now I expect to hear him start laughing uproariously at his own booger and fart jokes. And if I hear Roma's grating voice touting the wonders of "Healthy Trinity" stomach bugs one more time, I think I'll stick a fork through my ear.

So Mancow is exciting by comparison -- even despite having to endure the burden of a woefully miscast, overpaid, news reader sidekick -- Pat Cassidy. Cassidy is at best dead weight to the show, but all too frequently, he begins to fancy himself a serious journalist, id est, liberal journalist and has the effect of stepping on Mancow's lines, creating unneeded tension and basically, upsetting the timing and throwing a wet blanket over the entire production.

But anyway, Mancow calls himself a libertarian.

And in truth, he usually seems pretty true to libertarian ideals. He spoke at the Chicago Tea Party tax protest and afterwards lashed into his on-air guest, Leftist Congressthing, Jan Schakowsky in a way that she has probably never experienced in her life. He actually had you cheering him on.

But yesterday, Mancow interviewed one of those pecksniffity women from the Ralph Nader nutritional group, that every six months or so, crawls out of the Beltway muck to propose some new limitation on our liberty.

This month they're advocating requirements that restaurant chains print complete nutritional information for every dish served.

Aside from the fact that this would cost restaurants a bundle -- likely necessitate an increase in costs to the consumer and probably necessitate the layoffs of some of their illegal alien busboys and cooks -- it is clearly a step down the Naderite road of prohibiting certain food choices.

But "libertarian" Mancow thought this was just great.

Apparently suffering from something of a burgeoning lard butt (perhaps osmotically contracted from daily proximity to Cassidy) and a passion for fast food, he said the government should regulate what he eats, to protect him from himself.

This prompted a regional Libertarian Party spokeswoman to call in and tell Mancow that real libertarians don't plead for government protection and care.

Maybe next, Mancow will want OSHA to come in to the WLS studios and put safety bars around his desk.

He would certainly want to be safeguarded by his government nanny protectors, should he somnalescently fall off his stool while listening to Roma's interminably turgid "Healthy Trinity," commercials.
